If you’re like most businesses, you offer your services either locally in your town or state, or perhaps to the entire country. If this is the case, 99% of the time you’re going to want to register a .com domain name. A .com is the domain name that represents a “company”. Now it may be the case, like many of our customers, that you’re a “sole trader” rather than a registered LLC, but nonetheless the .com domain will be best for you. Pick the option that will best communicate who is using your service and where they’re located.

However, if you offer services or products to international customers, you may want to choose a .com domain. The advantage is that it signals to search engines that your business serves international customers. Using a .co.nz domain will mean search engines such as Google, Yahoo, and Bing will prioritize showing your site in local (New Zealand) search results. If 75% of your customers are in New Zealand, ask yourself – do you think most of your business growth will come from here locally, or from overseas?
